Collision Audit Survey

Volunteer reports tell us where collisions have happened, but they can’t tell us how many strikes go unnoticed at a given building, or which windows are the real repeat offenders. To fill that gap, we’re launching a structured collision-audit survey: regular, repeated walks of a set of downtown blocks to systematically look for evidence of bird strikes — window marks, feather smudges, or birds found stunned or dead at the base of glass.

Surveys will follow the same route on a consistent schedule (particularly during spring and fall migration, when strike risk is highest), so results from one visit can be compared to the next. That consistency is what lets us tell the difference between a building that had one unlucky morning and a building that is a genuine hotspot worth prioritizing for window treatment.

We’ve identified twelve downtown blocks as our initial survey area, chosen for their mix of large glass facades, reflective storefronts, and nearby landscaping that can steer birds toward windows. Each block below is defined by the streets that bound it, so volunteers can walk the same perimeter every time.
